Third Grade
Inspirational Splatter Paint ARt
The third grade enjoyed creating splatter paint art. Each student began by placing intersecting strips of painter’s tape across their paper. Next, they painted over the entire sheet with watercolors. Many used a variety and others used a splatter paint technique. After the paint dried, the students used black pens to write inspirational phrases or words on the blank strips. Each student brought their unique perspective and creativity to the project.

Watercolor landscape collage
auction project 2022
For this year’s auction project, students were inspired by our Western North Carolina mountain landscapes. Each group voted on a landscape they would like to recreate using watercolor and collage techniques. The students learned five common watercolor techniques to begin the process. Next, the students joined teams based on the parts of a landscape: sky, ground, trees, mountains, and rocks. Each team used their favorite watercolor technique to paint their part of the landscape. For example, the sky team painted colors that you would find in the sky. Finally, the teams worked together and used their decorated paper to form a collage. When a collage came together, the students immediately realized that their part had a powerful impact on the larger work. Each student felt a sense of accomplishment and joy at seeing their hard work pay off.
Thumbprint ARt
I love watching the creativity happen when students start making thumbprints! A few examples of my students' work are featured below. Other examples or ideas can be found on my Pinterest page at www.pinterest.com/annawhall/crafty-ideas/thumbprint-art/. This is a good one day project students of all ages.
Painted Fall Leaves
After finding this activity on Deep Space Sparkle's website at www.deepspacesparkle.com/fall-leaves/, I couldn't wait to try it with my third grade class. We began by taking a nature walk with the students to gather our leaves. I encouraged the students to find many different shapes and sizes as we walked around campus. Then, I had the students watch the video as a good step-by-step model for completing the work. www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=19&v=-2frUcgQ8UQ.
Collage for Auction
The third grade students collaborated to create the work above for our school auction in April of 2017. The students drew dragonflies based on templates and from their imagination (pictures above of students working). Then, they painted the dragonflies with watercolor and decorated the wings with glitter glue. Then, the students painted the cattails and grass with watercolors. In addition, the students painted the small blue canvases and glued the book pages on top when they were dry. Lastly, all the canvases were arranged and glued to the large blue canvas along with the cattails, grass, and dragonflies to complete the work.
POP-Up Cards
These pop-up cards were decorated with colored paper, scissors, and glue. The personalized message inside were well received by our third graders' mothers.
