Henri RoUSseau
The third grade studied animals and ecology in Science this quarter. The tie in for art was the study of a famous artist named Henri Rousseau. He was a self-taught French artist that painted jungle scenes with animals in a simple yet creative way during the Post-Impressionistic period. He was respected and admired by other famous artists such as Picasso for taking liberties that no other painter was taking at the time. The third grade class drew their own jungles scenes and used watercolors and pen to fill in the backgrounds. Then, they added animals using oil pastels, colored pencils, and glue. Each piece of work reflects the student’s understanding of how animals interact with their environments (the tie in to ecology).

I began teaching this project by talking to the class about ecology and Henri Rousseau with this slideshow.
