Notan Art
What is a Notan in art?
Notan is a Japanese term which literally means "light dark harmony". Artists use "notan studies" to explore different arrangements of light and dark elements in a painting, without having the distraction of other elements like color, texture and finer details. The The Japanese Art of Notan video introduced the concept of using positive and negative space as well as symmetrical vs. asymmetrical designs.

The fifth grade students also watched a step-by-step video called CRAVE Japanese Notan 5th Grade. The teacher offered good tips for building an asymmetrical Notan design with colored paper.
