Mosaic Birdhouses
The third grade students studied the Roman culture at the end of the year. To collaborate with the unit, I decided to teach them about Roman mosaics. First, I did a quick presentation on mosaics by showing pieces of the website, Rome's Hidden Mosaics. Then, I gave the students a variety of birdhouse templates and birds from google images (of course, I enlarged some of the pictures). Each student came up with their own composition and used colored bits of paper to mosaic the images. The students enjoyed this project because it only took about a week and a half to complete and it wasn't hard to glue the pieces of paper down. We just used simple glue sticks to adhere the paper to the black background. Then, I matted each piece and displayed them at our end of year Talents Celebration.
