Still Life Work
Second Grade STill Lifes
We began this project by building a simple fall still life with a pitcher of sunflowers and ornamental pumpkins on a table in the center of the room. I then arranged the students in a circle around the still life. I had the students make viewfinders out of paper and find their viewpoint paying close attention to what they saw in their field. For example, some students saw two sunflowers or just two pumpkins, others saw three. Next, I had the students sketch their composition with pencil. Then, the students went over their lines with black sharpie markers. We then discussed techniques that can be used with chalk pastels, and the students colored in their compositions. Lastly, I had the students pick two colors (a light and dark color) to shade in the background and ground.
