Symmetry with Self-Portraits
The middle school girls posed for their portrait that I printed in gray scale. Then, I cut each portrait down the middle and glued one half down on a blank sheet of card stock. The students used several methods to fill in the blank side of their face. Some students simply used tracing paper to outline the major components of their face. Then, they flipped the tracing paper over and went over the lines again (that leaves a faint line on the blank side). Others used a point system where they placed a dot wherever they knew their eyes, nose, or mouth or hair line to be. Others measured out the aspects of their faces with rulers. The students then used artist pencils to shade in the remaining half of their faces. These works turned out to be amazing because the students were invested in making quality work.
