abstract Watercolor Landscapes
This is my favorite watercolor project! I love watching the students come up with the layers and design. I typically begin by having the students paint their backgrounds using the technique of adding salt to the wet paint which causes the variation in color for the sky. Then, I have the students make the other layers using methods such as masking with Scotch tape for the stripes, adding Elmer's glue for texture, and applying rubbing alcohol to wet paint for polka dots. After the layers and background dry, the students rub off the salt. Finally, I have the students create the layers of the landscape by cutting wavy lines and gluing them down. The students create the background first then work their way down the composition to the foreground creating the layered effect. I encourage each of these students to add a sun or moon as well. You will notice that many of them decided to add other details like trees or birds. Some of the students wanted to challenge themselves by creating night scenes or cityscapes using this method of building a composition. I hung these in the main hall of our school, and the students received many compliments. |
