Nature Journals
The fourth and fifth grade students created nature journals during the leaf season in the mountains, which is around the third to fourth week in October. I used the template below to build the books to showcase the drawings.

They did multiple leaf studies as well as a tree study. Each page represents one day of work on the journals. I also used this resource: How to Draw Fall Leaves

The fifth grade students studied cellular biology in the spring. They looked at the anatomy of plant and animal cells, but mainly focused on plants. They went to the Arboretum in Asheville to learn more about the local fauna and came back with a deeper understanding of what plants are native to our area of the Appalachian Mountains. I carried the study over into art by having the students make nature journals. We took hikes around campus each day and picked different plant species to draw and catalog in our journals. Each student compiled a nice diary of their experience by the end of their study on plants.
